Major Hayter’s Address

Sir,—The remarks of Major Adriaft Hayter reported in your newspaper make interesting reading when one considers that shortly he will take over the leadership of Scott Base, Antarctica. His long tirade against the United States and his wish that we should sever all relations would seem to suggest that he should think again about his new appointment. For to get there he will fly in an American plane or sail in an American ship; all his supplies will come In on American transport; ’all his field parties will be transported to their various destinations by helicopter or R.4.D5., and in every way he will be dependent on the American VX6 squadron. There has been no effort in the past undertaken by Scott Base that has not leaned very heavily on generosity of the United States Navy. A true patriot does not bite the "hand that feeds him, a lesson 'that any Scott Base leader is quick to learn.—Yours, etc., PRAM POINT. August 20,. 1964. [Major Hayter replies:— " ‘Pram Point’s’ letter expresses only half the truth. Antarctic arrangements with the United States are made on a government-to-govern-ment ■ level by which facilities given equate with the facilities received, to the mutual benefit of both countries. Rather than reply in detail to ‘Pram Point’s’ own tirade, I prefer to wait and let my own' performance as leader at Scott Base speak for itself when the job is done.”]
