Growth Of Trade
The meat works of the Canterbury- Frozen Meat Company, Ltd., at Belfast, have always provided facilities for employees to buy their meat there. The facilities have always been available to the families of employees and over the years this service has grown and become extended to the public generally. The number of cars parked outside the Belfast works each Friday gives some indication of the popularity of this service. At one time the demand for meat direct from the works was so great that a whole train load of people from as far afield as Lyttelton travelled to Belfast each Friday. In J 962 the company decided to enter the local retail meat trade and bought several shops. Thia led to the forming of the subsidiary company, C.FM. Sales, Ltd. The company now has 23 shops in Canterbury, 17 of which are in Christchurch. The latest undertaking by the company, the establishment of the modem market in Belfast, has been earried out with a view to catering not only for Belfast and Christchufth customers, but for those travelling to and from North Canterbury.
