The Rev. D. D. Thorpe, of St. John’s, Latimer square, has been appointed by the Bishop of Christchurch (the Rt. Rev. A. K. Warren), as a Canon of the Christchurch Cathedral, on the joint nomination of the Standing Committee of the Diocese and the Cathedral Chapter. The retiring president of the South Island Motor Union (Mr E. C. Champion) was thanked for all he had done while president of the union by Mr W. R. Martyn at a meeting of the union executive committee yesterday. Whoever followed Mr Champion would have a job to live up to his example, Mr Martyn said. The meeting supported the comments with acclamation. Mr Champion has been president for three years.
Mr H. Purchase, formerly inspecting engineer (diesel and mechanical), has been appointed chief mechanical engineer in the Railways Department, in succession to Mr R. F. Black, and Mr G. F. Bridges, formerly Wellington district engineer, has been appointed chief civil engineer in succession to Mr C. Clark. —(P.A.) Miss Nancy Northcroft, Mr P. P. Meffin (Christchurch), and Mr R. B. Jones (Greymouth) have been appointed Justices of the Peace.
Mr T. M. McKewen, of Wellington, has been appointed a member of the Local Authorities Loans Board.—(P.A.)
