KILLING AVENGED
Action In E. Katanga (N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright) ELISABETHVILLE, Aug. 11; East Katanga police yesterday killed 27 rebels after they speared to death a young Congolese army lieutenant in Baudouinville, police report. At least 130 people were killed in the recapture of the town by police at the weekend, according to local ranchers. But reports on rebel casualties are contradictory. The lieutenant was caught by the rebels during a coun-ter-attack on Baudouinville, according to intercepted radio messages from ranchers and police units.. The rebels had previously held the town on the shores of Lake Tanganyika for over two weeks.
A radio report from the White Fathers Mission at Mpala, about 25 miles north of Baudouinville, said the retreating rebel remnants were believed to be heading towards the mission. • All bridges on the route had been cut, the message said. ■
