TROTTING Deft In Rousing Trial For Louisson Handicap

The Southland mare, Deft, showed that she was in good order for her engagement in the Louisson Handicap on Saturday when she worked over one mile and a half at Addington Raceway yesterday. She paced well when third to Lordship and Jay Ar at last week's trials and she should make a bold bid to graduate to New Zealand Cup class with a win on Saturday.

The early horses to work had perfect conditions, but later a blustery northerly wind affected times. The track was fast. Other horses to work pleasingly included Tibet, Carver Doon, Scotleigh and Soanfra, all of which are engaged on the first day of the national meeting.

Deft, driven by D. C. Watts, who handled her towards the end of last season, went away in front of Idaho, Vanderford and Light Mood from the mile and a half post. She attempted to shy with slightly less than six furlongs left and her companions lost a few lengths, particularly Light Mood, which dropped back 18 yards. Light Mood sprinted up to second in the back straight, but dropped out at the furlong post Vanderford then challenged along the rails and was a neck behind Deft at the finish. Idaho was a length and a half further back, five lengths in front of Light Mood. Deft paced the 12 furlongs in 3min 21 l-ssec, the last half-mile in Imin 2sec, and the final quarter in 29 2-ssec. She and Vanderford are rivals in the Louisson Handicap. Vanderford could need a race or two to sharpen him up. Idaho has not raced in New Zealand since he won after recording tain 14sec for two

miles at Addington last November. In the meantime he has been campaigned in Australia. He looks in solid condition and will not be without a chance in the Templeton Handicap.. Carver Doon and the Pukekohe trotter, Scotleigh, were let off with an easy two miles in tain 44sec, the last halfmile in Imin 4 3-ssec. They speeded up to take 29 l-ssec for their final quarter, with both horses running on strongly. Carver Doon looks to be carrying plenty of condition. He is in the August Handicap. Scotleigh looks ready to make a bold showing in the Christchurch Handicap, the second leg of the double. Tibet’s Trial Tibet worked keenly throughout a sblo run over two miles in tain 46sec. He increased the pace to record Imin 4sec for his last halfmile, and 31 l-ssec for his final quarter. Tibet finished last season with, two winning runs and he should make a bold bid to keep his record intact when he contests the two-mile Ribbonwood Handicap on Saturday. Smokeaway made the pace for Massacre, which finished with a slight advantage, over one mile and a half in 3min Zlsec, the last half-mile in Imin 4sec, and the final quarter in 29sec. Massacre will contest the Lightning Handicap on Saturday. He looks to have had plenty of work. Marino Maid took the lead after a furlong and a half, but was no match for Tunnel

Road at the end of one mile and a half in 3min 20 4-ssec, the last half-mile in Imin 3 2-ssec, and the final' quarter in 30 l-ssec. Highland Globe finished a good third, with a gap to Arizona Gal, which broke and lost 60 yards at the end of half a furlong. Tunnel Road will contest the Four-year-old Stakes, in which he will be driven by K. D. Murray, on Saturday. Highland Globe is in the Maiden Handicap. Soanfra went easily on his own over one mile and a half in 3min 26 4-ssec, the last half mile in Imin 5 4-ssec, and the final quarter in 32sec. He has never looked better than at present and could add interest to the Templeton Handicap. In Stakes Compact and Lusty Lad, entrants for the Canterbury Stakes on the second night of the meeting, went- over one mile and a quarter in 2min 54sec, the last half mile in Imin 6sec, and the final quarter in 31sec. Super Glow went quietly over one mile and a half, quickening to sprint his last quarter in 31sec. Super Glow has done well lately and he could upset calculations in the Opening Handicap on Saturday. Mighty Chief, which was having his first run since he won at Ashburton in June, went quietly over one mile

and a half in 3min 37 4-ssec, the last half mile in Imin Bsec, and the final quarter in 32 4-ss?c. Mighty Chief looks to have thrived during the winter. All going well he will resume racing at one of the New Brighton meetings next month.

Glen Castle, which was balloted out of the Maiden Handicap, went over one mile and a half in 3min 30 3-ssec, the last half mile in Imin 5 3-5 sec, and the final quarter in 31 l-ssec. A place-getter in two of his three starts last term, he might get a run on the second night of the meeting. Gay Return, which has yet to qualify, went well over one mile and a half in 3min 20 l-ssec, the last half mile in Imin 4 l-ssec, and the final quarter in 31 4-ssec.
