NELSON, August 4.
Nelson marine engineers put long hours of work into the inter-colonial vessel, Fijian Trader, to enable her to sail for Bluff, shortly after 9 a.m. today.
The vessel had diverted to Nelson during a rugged Tasman crossing and entered port on Thursday night desperately short of lubricating oil and without lighting, heating or cooking facilities. Shortly after the vessel berthed, Nelspn Harbour Board engineers began repair work on the generator and Anchor Company engineers started engine impairs with the aid of the ship’s engineers. the next day. Engine repairs kept the engineers busy until 10 p.m. on Friday, 10 p.m. on Saturday and 9 p.m. on Sunday. Parts Made An Anchor Company engineer said yesterday that it
had been necessary to recondition three connecting rod bearings and manufacture new casting studs for the starboard engine.
The bearings had been rerun and the replacement studs made in the company’s foundry at Nelson. The ship entered port on Thursday with a piece of wood wedged between a bulkhead and the engine to minimise engine vibration. Repair work was inspected yesterday by Mr J. L. Smith, superintendent engineer of the Anchor Company, Mr R. A. New, his deputy and Mr J. Anderson, Marine Department surveyor of ships.
