NEW PLYMOUTH, Aug. 4.

A New Zealander will be asked to search the jungles of Thailand for a rare yellow camellia. He is the leader of the joint New Zealand Rotary and Volunteer Service Abroad team, Mr N. Bellingham. An American horticultural expert visiting New Plymouth, Dr. W. E. Lammerts, said today that because the flowers could be growing in Thailand he intended writing to Mr Bellingham asking for

help in the search for the

camellia. French botanists had discovered varieties of the flower in Indo-China and in North Vietnam and South Vietnam, but these areas were no longer freely open to botanists. The yellow camellias’ main use, said Dr. Lammerts, would be hybridisation. By crossing them with species of japonica he hoped to be able to introduce camellias of gold, orange and yellow shades.
