PEDESTRIAN INJURIES

Local Bodies Now Liable

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) LONDON, August 4. Britons may now sue their local council if they injure themselves on unrepaired footpaths, roads, and bridges. A new act came into force yesterday. It provides that local authorities can no longer disclaim liability for such injuries.

The act was given Royal Assent in 1961 but its operation was delayed for three years to allow councils time to improve the standard of their highways. As a result, several local bodies have equipped officials with cycles to tour the town inspecting the state of its roads.

Others, known as pavement inspectors, have to walk the footpaths to discover ill-fitting paving stones that might trip a citizen.
