Obituary MR H. N. DAY

A Lyttelton man, who fought in two world wars, died in Christchurch recently. He was Mr Harold Norman Day, of 16 Reserve terrace. Mr Day, who spent 38 years in the New Zealand Army artillery, was the grandson of early settlers in Lyttelton. Day’s road in Lyttelton was named after the family. Mr Day, who was born and attended school at Lyttelton, won the Military Medal for bravery in the field while serving with the New Zealand forces in Europe in 1916. After the war, he served with the British Occupation Forces in Germany. Mr Day spent his working life in Wellington. Kg married Miss Edith Harmer and they had three sons and one daughter. At the beginning of World War 11, Mr Day was stationed at Mount Victoria, as Regimental Sergeant-Major of the Twenty-second Battalion. He served with the Second Echelon in the Middle East and gained the Distinguished Conduct Medal. After the war, he re-entered the pennanet force and served in the artillery section until his retirement in 1957. His retirement was spent in Lyttelton where he lived with his sister, Mrs F. M. Greatbatch. He is survived by two sons.
