SUGAR TRIALS
Overseas Interest
(N.Z. Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, July 20. English and American concerns were Very interested in the Taranaki Sugar Company Ltd.’s trials, and were “quite impressed” with the tortanges an acre obtained, a
director of the company, Mr I. Stevenson, said today. Mr Stevenson has recently returned from a five weeks’ overseas tour during which he studied the production of sugar beet, particularly in the United States and England. “In the United States,” he said, “20 tons or more an acre was considered good cropping. Anything over 10 tons was considered profit.” Mr Stevenson was impressed with the close liaison overseas between research centres concentrating on sugar beet and the producers.
“Offers have been made, to my company to send technical experts to Taranaki to assist in the trials, but we are not ready for them yet,” he said. '
“They are very eager and willing to help in any way they can.”
Mr Stevenson also said the machinery used during sowing, cultivation and harvesting of the trial crops was equal to any being used in the world.
