Rare Lusitania Medal Presented To Council

(New Zealand Press Association)

PALMERSTON NORTH, July 20. Memories of the sinking of the liner Lusitania by the Germans in 1915 were revived at the meeting of the Palmerston North City Council this evening.

The council accepted a “Lusitania medal” struck by the Germans to mark their naval success. The medal was presented to the city by Mrs M. E. McCulloch, of Palmerston North. The cast iron medallion is believed to be one of only about three remaining of those

originally cast, and 2000 dollars have been offered by an American collector for one of the originals. The medal bears the figure of death sitting at a ticket office of the Cunard Line selling tickets to passengers, one of whom is reading a newspaper headlined “Submarine

Danger.” On the reverse side is an impression in heavy relief of the Lusitania sinking. These original medals were later copied in the finest detail in bronze by British craftsmen for wartime propaganda purposes.
