INTERMEDIATE SCHOOLS

Spreydon And Ashburton

The Canterbury Education Board should not wait until roll numbers in schools in an area were big enough to justify the establishment of an intermediate school before making a move to build one. Instead, the board should try to foresee an increase in numbers and plan for it, Mrs C. C. Holland, a member of the board, said at the board’s last meeting.

The board decided to place intermediate schools at Spreydon and Ashburton on the draft building programme for 1965-66, and to ask for the comments of school committees in those areas. The Spreydon school would be planned to open in 1967 and the Ashburton school in 1968. The board has called tenders for four classrooms and an administration block at Russley, a new post-primary block at the Methven District High School, two classrooms and service rooms at Windwhistle, a new residence at Le Bons Bay, two classrooms and service rooms at Tinwald, the sale of the old school building at Halkett, and the ' rebuilding of the manual training centre at the Southbridge District High School. The lowest tender received for a four-classroom addition at the Avondale School gave a large saving in costs on the estimate, but this was in contrast to the general trend of tenders, especially for country work, the secretary-man-ager (Mr W. P. Spencer) told the board. “I think there is no doubt that a period of rising building costs must be faced,’ he said.
