DEAD STOCK NEAR ROAD

(N.Z. Press Association) GISBORNE, July 20. A 74-year-old farmer, H. ,E. Mana Mahnika was convicted and fined £l5 when he appeared before Mr L. N. Richie, S.M., at Ruatoria on a charge of leaving dead stock near a highway. The Ruatoria stock inspector, Mr S. G. C. Newdick, said on May 5 he found four carcases in a bad state of decomposition and a more recent one 50 to 150 yards from the road on Whakawhitira station. The defendant admitted ownership of the carcases. “He offered as an excuse for one carcase that he had been away for a while.”

The carcases had been there fbr a month to 6 weeks, Mr Newdick said. The defendant had been warned twice last year' for similar offences.
