CITY COUNCIL NEWS IN BRIEF

A tender by British Pavements, Ltd., of £54,992 was accepted by the City Council last evening for the reconstruction of Fitzgerald aven e between the Avon river bridge and Heywood terrace.

The tender was the lowest of three received, and the completion date was given by the contractors as 12 months.

Acceptance of the tender, which is above the estimated cost, is subject to agreeme't by the Ministry of Works. The work will be wholly financed by the National Boa’; Board.

Traffic Signs.—The council approved a stop sign in Simeon street at its intersection with Milton street and give-way signs in Tedder avenue and Saltaire street at their corners with Mariotts road and in Brougham street where it crosses Colombo street.

Art Purchase.— Two works by Russell Clark—a sculpture in bronze fibre glass, “A Figure,” and an oil painting “Cabbage Tree in Flower” — were approved for the Robert McDougall Art Gallery. Each cost 45 guineas. £lOOO Donation.—A donation of £lOOO was made to the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s centennial appeal. Music Council.—The council renewed its grant of £375 to the Christchurch Civic Music Council. Firewod Sales.—An increase in the price of firewood from its plantations was approved by the council. The reserves committee said prices had not been reviewed since 1951 and that some increase was justified by the rise in labour and other costs since then. Sunday Soccer.—A match between the touring French soccer team and a local team at English Park on Sunday, August 9. was approved. Proceeds will go to the Canterbury Football Association’s injured players’ fund.
