Mob Said It Would Kill

(N.Z P.A -Reuter—Copyright) NEW YORK, July 20.

A British showgirl described yesterday how she was attacked by Negroes during rioting in Harlem, the city’s main Negro district. “They just wanted to kill me,” said Carolyn Fawcett a 24-year-old blonde who dances at Manhattan’s Copacabana night club. “It was the most frightening expert-

ence in my life. If the police hadn’t arrived, they would have killed me.” Miss Fawcett, whose parents live in Cardiff, said she was driving to a New York suburb with her boy-friend. Jack Lambert, a 29-year-old motel owner, when they were diverted to a side street and met the rioters. Lambert’s car was blocked behind three other cars and they could not move as the Negroes converged on them, said Miss Fawcett. “Women were throwing stones and bottles into the

street,” she said. “Then the men came up to the car and started beating up Jack. I tried to hide on the floor of the car but they started hitting me too. They said, ‘Now we are going to kill you’. “One of them started hitting me with an iron bar. My head was cut open in a num-’-er of places,” she said. “The police came just in time,” she said t “This whole thing has restored my faith in the New York police. They were wonderful.

“It was obvious that they were after me especially,”

she said. “I suppose I stand for everything they hate—l’m blonde and white.”

Miss Fawcett said they were taken to the local hospital, and that was the most terrible mess you’ve ever seen. “There were people sitting around with blood streaming,” she said.

"You could still see the hate in their eyes,” she said “We were even afraid in the hospital. I have compassion for them,” she said, "but it has run out Just to attack people who are doing nothing but driving home.”
