“Carrots And Sticks”

Sir, —So Professor Philpott favours “tax urges” for farmers. More production usually means more work. Where to obtain satisfactory farm labout in quantity? I suggest the economy is top-heavy with economists, administrators, etc., who could have provided this labour force. A survey by his assistant reveals most of the Peninsula farmers are past their prime; hence the suggested tax to oust those “coasting along.” Why should these farmers work harder else forsake a way of life so the high standard of living enjoyed by the nation can be further selfishly indulged? Farmers are entitled to the equivalent of a five-day week. It will be a sad day if democracy is further infringed with unjust, unequivocal taxes.— Yours, etc., FEWER DRONES, MORE PRODUCTION. July 15. 1964.
