Emerson Injured; Australia Wins

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) MONTREAL, July 18. The Wimbledon champion, R. Emerson, hurt his right side slightly during yesterday’s singles match against Canada, said the team captain, Harry Hopman, today.

Hopman said he had given the injury, which was slight, heat treatment and this was being continued today.

He said towards the finish of today’s doubles when Emerson and A. Roche beat F. Godbout and K. Carpenter in straight sets to clinch the tie, Emerson eased up on his service.

Hopman said he planned to play Emerson in tomorrow’s final singles provided his side was better.

Emerson and Roche won 6-2, 6-2, 6-2. Yesterday Emerson and J. Newcombe provided Australia with a convincing lead when they won the first two singles.

A crowd of about 1700 watched the play at the Mount Royal Tennis Club in Montreal.

At no stage did the Australians appear to be in danger of losing the tie. Emerson beat Carpenter In less than an hour. He won 6-2. 6-2, 6-1.

But Newcombe had to fight hard against the more experienced Godbout. It took him two hours and 15 minutes in extreme heat to beat the stubborn and occasionally brilliant Canadian. Newcombe won, 6-3, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5.
