University Loses Key Game To Linwood

Linwood took a decisive step towards winning the senior Rugby championship when it beat University A, 14-11, in a hardfought and often exciting match at Lancaster Park Oval on Saturday.

It was a match in which major parts were played by a strong north-west wind, and two fine full-backs. Linwood deserved its victory, although it needed dedicated defence to keep University out in the second spell.

So with two matches to go, Linwood leads University A by one point, and its main remaining obstacle is Christchurch, which it will play next.

On Saturday, Linwood was not merely strong on defence and competent on attack. The team showed much more enterprise than was expected of it in such an important game, and it was a popular winner of a fine match. In the D.C.L. Shield com-

petition, for the second four teams, New Brighton held its advantage, and Albion, with its success over Marist, looks very likely to win the Challenge Cup, for which the last six teams are competing.
