Canty Hopeful Of Chess Win Over Wellington

In spite of the Canterbury No. 1 player, L. Easterman, being ill at the last moment, the province was well.-placed against Wellington, when play ended in an inter-provincial telegraphic Bledlsloe Cup chess match on Saturday.

Games were completed on only five of the 15 boards, in spite. of an agreed half-hour playing extension. Canterbury .won three of these games and Wellington the others. From a cursory examination of the positions in the adjourned games at the end of play, the provinces each looked hopeful of winning five; but the decision will rest with the adjudicators. A match score of 71 games each would probably result in a win for Canterbury on the count-back, as Canterbury seems to have the advantage on the higher boards which

score- better in a count-back. The winning team will meet the winner of the AucklandOtago match in the final. The cup is held at present by Auckland. One feature of the play was the good showing of Canterbury’s A. J. Nyman, promoted to the province’s No. 1 board, against the New Zealand chess champion, R. A. Court. Nyman was a pawn up at the end of play and seems likely to be adjudged the winner. Another notable feat was a queen* sacrifice by. the young Canterbury schoolboy, G. Hall, which gave him a win against a strong senior opponent, O. N. Thomson.

Canterbury’s team Included eight schoolboys. The Selectors originally included six. D. Esterman played instead of his father, taking bottom board, while J. Hughes played instead of B. N. Gloistein, another lastminute- scratching. Wellington played white on odd boards. Results were (adj. means for adjudication; Wellington names first): — ■ R. A. Court v. A. J. Nyman, adj.: A.
