Petition For By-Election

(N.Z. Press Association) WANGANUI, July 16. The Wanganui Ratepayers’ Association is organising a petition to force a by-election for the City Council seat vacated by Or. T. H. Masters, who has resigned under terms of the Local Authorities’ (Members’ Contract) Act. The association executive had decided to circulate the petition early next week, its secretary (Mr V. R. Sales) said tonight. Five hundred names will be required to force the byelection, which would be the city’s first for 18 years. Cr. Masters has resigned from the council in accordance with the provisions of the act, because a firm of which he is a director has undertaken to supply vehicles to the City Council and their value exceeds that stipulated under the act.
