Nomads On Chatham Cup Quest

Nomads take another step towards making their second successive appearance in the national Chatham Cup semifinal when they travel to Nelson today for their South Island semi-final tie* to be played tomorrow. As last year, their opponents will be Nelson Rangers, who have reached this stage of the competition for the fourth time in' six years. The Nelson team will be no stranger to Nomads, for it will have seven of’ the side that lost. 1-3, to the Canterbury champions last year. Rangers have an impressive record this season, and are unbeaten after 12 matches

in which they have scored 61 goals and conceded 10. The four newcomers to the team this year are’ the goalkeeper, W. Milne, a former South Island and Otago representative; the centre-half G. Smith; the inside-right, H. Nelson, and the left-wing, R. Batcheler.

Of these. Nelson is best known to the Nomads’ players. Last year he played on the wing for the Canterbury representative team and played against Nomads in two hard-fought local Chatham Cup finals while a member of the Christchurch City club.

Smith, a tall Scot, trans-

ferred with Milne from Nelson Thistle earlier in the season. He has been a Nelson representative for many years. Batcheler has returned to the Rangers team this year to replace O. Bajema, who has retired. The Nelson club scored its shock Chatham Cup victory in 1962 when it beat Western in the South Island semi-final on corners in extra time. It had lost to Western three years before at the same stage. Nomads will take 14 players for the match, but are likely to play the same team that beat Western at English Park last Saturday. The

three reserves are C. Stevens (goalkeeper), M. Rennell (right-back), and L McCallum (right-wing).. Tomorrow’s winner will play Dunedin Technical, which has already won its zone final. Nomads lost to Technical in the South Island final of the Rothmans tournament last year. The likely teams are: Nomads.—D. Chapman; J. Kissack, A. Hawthorne: D. Ennis, D. Simmonds (captain), G. Donaldson; C. Martin, A. van Rooyen, R. Muirsoh, F. Ouwerkerk, R. McLean. Rangers. W. Milne: B. Thomas, L. Morris: P. Perkins (captain), G. Smith. J. Wilson: R. Mcßride. H. Nelson, B. Clinton, R.
