Cockpit Voice Recorder To Aid Flight Safety

The campaign to increase flight safety has been advanced by the development of an aircrarft cockpit voice recorder. The voice recorder automatically produces a virtually indestructible record of ©very word spoken in an aircraft cockpit during a 30-minute period. After three years’ research, development and testing, production units for the recorder were shown recently by the Lockheed Aircraft Service Company. Three microphone and earphone inputs and one cockpit “hot mike” are used in the system. Conversation from ground to air, and within the cockpit, is recorded on closed loop magnetic tape. The recorder was designed to the specifications for commercial aircraft voice recorders, developed in America. Signal-conditioning cir-

cuits designed by Lockheed enable a recording of maximum clarity to be obtained without modifying existing aircraft equipment.

The voice recorder is the latest addition to airborne data recording, products developed .by the' Lockheed company. The company has more than 700 flight recorders being used in passenger jet aircraft throughout the world.

The company has also developed a maintenance recording system, now in military and commercial service. This system signals the need for maintenance, or the replacement of parts, before failures ’ occur.
