SURPRISES FEATURE OF SQUASH RACKETS

The second round of the Christchurch A grade squash rackets competition opened with a series of surprises In individual results, and bold attempts by two lowly placed teams to upset the leaders. University A and Christchurch A.

In the major upset of the night, J. H. N. Pine jumped to second Canterbury ranking position by beating the Christchurch champion. P. L. Mackenzie, in live games. D. J. Triggs, in a particularly good exhibition, regained fourth place by beating L G. Milne 9-7 in the fifth game. University A beat Christchurch B. which has won only one match this season, by only two games. Both K. M. Garrett and N. A. Justice, two of Canterbury’s best of the younger school, were beaten. H. S. Gair used his considerable experience to beat Garrett comfortably, and Justice lost, in five to P. R. Hadley, who showed easily his finest form of the season.

For Collegiate the former Tlmaru player P. G. Angland was clearly superior to B. J. Shirlaw in the final stages, and N. W. Wilder, a schoolboy, won his first A grade match, upsetting W. Thom.

If Collegiate had not been without C. J. Tippins it might well have beaten the second positioned team, Christchurch A, for S. Suckling had no trouble in fourth, his win in three games proving decisive. Pine played without error for long periods against Mackenzie, and deserved to win. He might easily have done so more decisively, for Mackenzie took his two games only at 10-8 and 10-9.

. Mackenzie was a.little below his best, making unusual errors, but Pine varied his game more than usual, and surprised with some fine winners. He refused to give in and over the five games was too fit for Mackenzie, who seemed iqoi'e affected by the hard first game, and a sequence of 17 rallies in the fourth, without a point being scored. Championship points are: University A 16, Christchurch A 12, University B 11, Christchurch C 9, Officers’ Club 8, Collegiate 6, Christchurch B 2, Wigram 0.
