University’s Big Space Reshuffle

The University of Canterbury will add a second storey to its administrative block extension in Montreal street, teaching departments will move into the present buildihgs of the Industrial Development Department (to move to St Asaph street), and this will set in train a large-scale reshuffling of accommodation on the central site, in houses in Gloucester street, and in- the former Whakatata private hotel.

The Vice-Chancellor (Dr. L. L. Pownall) reported that the additional administrative floor would permit extra appointments to be made and full use to be made of equipment now lying idle. The public

counter would be restored to its original length. The University Grants Committee had also authorised sketch plans for a building of 3900 sq ft at Ham to bouse the computer and the new automatic telephone exchange for the university. This unit would become part of the administrative block at Ham.

Dr. Pownall reviewed in detail the accommodation needs for 1965. including 12 more staff and 11 research places in botany, chemistry, physics and zoology and 22 arts and general staff. All these were expedients, Dr.' Pownall said, and

changes caused a great deal of inconvenience for those involved. Yet not one voice had been raised in complaint. Staff realised that redistribution of accommodation was inevitable, as some departments moved, until the whole

university transferred to Um.

Dr. Pownall said he made his statement to indicate the continuing problems, the > measures taken to meet them, and the need for funds to make alterations.
