All Diesel In 10 Years

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 30. Diesel traffic on all New Zealand railways within 10 years, and moves toward the electrification of all main trunk lines within 25 years, are forecast by Mr R. F. Black, chief mechanical engineer for the Railways Department, who retired today on the completion of 40 years’ service. At present, he said, there was a 90 per cent diesel saturation in the North Island and 20 per cent in the South Island. All services would be diesel within 10 years, and sooner than this in the North Island.
