Riccarton Fashions

Two women member* of the Canterbury Jockey Club were given a special welcome to the annual meetihg of the club yesterday by the chairman (Mr G. H. Grigg). “We would like to see more of our ladies present” he said. Women's part in the elub was discussed several times in general business.

First a member compained that women owners were not given the same faculties as men owners. For instance, they were net taken np to the stewards’ stand and given a drink, he said. While the stewards' stand has always been regarded as a male preserve, women owners were welcomed and given the usual courtesy of

luncheon and afternoon tea tickets, Mr Grigg said. The time might come when women were stewards of the club, he added. There was nothing to prevent that

Then a member complained that with the shifting of the members* stand there was no longer a walk where “ladies can display their finery,” and he suggested that the committee could investigate the possibility of building a ramp from the members’ stand across to the lawn.

Mr Grigg said this would be kept in mind by the committee. He agreed that with the shifting of the site of the members’ stand there was not the same opportunity for “lady members” to show their new costumes.
