Cup Pair In 4th Round
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) WIMBLEDON, June 30.
The Davis Cup pair, L. A. Gerrard and 1. S. Crookendeh, yesterday produced New Zealand’s best performance in this year’s Wimbledon championships.
In a third-round men’s doubles they beat the leading British partnership, M. J. Sangster and R. K. Wilson, 9-7, 6-3, 9-7. Wilson and Sangster did little to commend themselves by their performance. Ohly once did they ever look like getting clear when they had a service break and a 4-2 lead in the third set. But they let the initiative swing all too easily to the New Zealanders. Gerrard and Crookenden now go through to the fourth round in which they meet the No. 1 seeds, R. D. Ralston and C.' R. McKinley (United States), on the Centre Court today. Sangster, possessor of one of the biggest services in amateur tennis, played badly. He gave the temperamental Wilson little support at the net and Wilson responded by five times failing to hold his service. Crookenden, the 6ft 2in left-hander, dropped his service twice but in spite of this the New Zealanders always looked the likely winners.
