BASES IN PACIFIC
Soviet Charge Denied (N.Z. Pre»a Assn.—Copyright) NEW YORK, June 30. Mr Pavel F. Shakhov (Russia) today accused Australia and the United States of turning the Pacific trust territories they administer into military bases. Mr Shakhov told the United Nations Trusteeship Council there were more than 200 airfields on Papua and New Guinea, under Australian control, and that the Pacific islands territory under the United States was also a. vast military establishment
He said Australia and the United States turned the territories into closed zones to conceal the true situation from the world. This was shown, he said, by their refusal to include Russian members in United Nations visiting missions to the territories. Mr Dudley McCarthy (Australia). denied that New Guinea and Papua had been converted into military bases. i
