BIRDS NEAR AIRPORT
Extermination Succeeding CANBERRA, June 30. The seagull menace at Sydney airport is now under control, according to the ornithologist engaged to defeat the birds. The ornithologist, Dr. G. F. van Tets, says that as soon as refuse tips are closed the number of seagulls in the immediate vicinity of the airport will drop to 500. There were 10,000 birds there previously. Wires were stretched across ponds and swamps drained to discourage seagulls. “Mopping-up” operations would practically eliminate the hazard, he said. Dr. van Tets said a major aim in the “mopping-up” operations would be to persuade people not to leave scraps and rubbish after picnics on beaches and in parks near the airport. .
