“COTTAGES GENUINE”
Mayor Defends Stratford (NZPA-Reuter—Coptrighti LONDON, June 29 The Mayor of Stratford-on-Avon (Aiderman P. W. Wheeler) today challenged a statement by Dr. J. C. Reid, an associate professor at Auckland University, that Shakespeare's birthplace was “a commercial slum” dedicated to making money from the sale of fake Elizabethan souvenirs.
The Mayor said: "Quite obviously there is a sale of souvenirs, but it is certainly not a commercial slum. Souvenirs are sold in other places of interest. “No-one has to buy souvenirs. It is a great pity that those persons who visit Stratford and have complaints cannot make them to the townspeople at the time so they have the opportunity of replying.” There was sufficient proof about the authenticity of Shakespeare’s birthplace and Ann Hathaway’s cottage, he said.
The Press Association reports Dr. Reid as saying in reply: “It was very commendable and natural of the Mayor of Stratford-on-Avon to defend his town’s largest industry, but I should have been more impressed bad he produced a single Shakespearean scholar prepared to vouch for the authenticity and integrity of the birthplace and Ann Hathaway's cottage.”
