Danger Day For Watt

"VO-ONE can blame B. A. Watt if he exercises unusual care today. On the Wednesday preceding each of the last two inter-island games he was injured badly enough to have to withdraw from the South Island team. At Timaru in 1962 he suffered a recurrence of a leg injury in a match against South Canterbury; last year, against Southland at Invercargill, he received concussion and spent several days in hospital.

As if the Injury was not bad enough; Watt’s replacement, on each occasion, proved to be one of the men of the match. T. N. McAra (West Coast), who was called into the side in 1962, scored the winning try in the last minute, while E. W. Kirton (Otago), the 1963 stand-in, made two of South’s tries, overshadowed M. A. Herewini and laid the foundations for his selection in the All Black team to Britain and France. Watt’s injuries in the last two seasons have cost him the chance of playing in five successive inter-island matches, a feat that will be achieved by J. M. Le Lievre and W. F. McCormick on Saturday. At least Watt does not have a football match to play today.
