TABLE TENNIS Foster And Miss Inglis Retain Titles
B. A. Foster (Otago) and Miss F. Inglis (Canterbury) retained their table tennis titles when the Canterbury open championships were held at the weekB. Shewan (South Canterbury) beat his fellow provincial representative. T. Underdown, to reach the final -of the men’s singles. In a spectacular match Foster beat Shewan in • four games. • In a dull contest. Miss Inglis beat Mrs P. M. Purdon to take the women’s singlet title. Underdown and Shewan beat last year's men’s doubles champions, V. N. Brightwell and A. Vermes, in the semi-finals but lost to B. and R. Foster (Otago) in the final. In a hard-hitting match eparked with loop drives and counter-hitting, the Otago pair won 21-19 in the deciding game, Foster gained a third title when he won the mixed doubles with Miss V. Braumann.
