LIBEL LAW CHANGES
Journalists Seek Bill
(N.Z. Press Assn.— Copyright) LONDON, June 29. The Institute of Journalists will recommend the Press Council to seek the introduction of a Government - sponsored - bill to amend the law of libel.
The Court of Appeal should have the power to review the amount of damages awarded in any case of libel or slander that it considers either grossly excessive or grossly inadequate, the institute believes. The institute will also ask the council to investigate procedure and related aspects of libel law.
It will also make recommendations about the Official Secrets Act and its effect on press freedom.
