Care Of The Aged

Sir, —Your correspondent “Shut Out” is one of many of the friendless and lonely old people who appreciate the good work of the Christchurch Senior Citizens’ Association. Our cafeteria is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily to serve teas, sandwiches and buns for a nominal fee or a bowl of hot soup at noon (to members) for an annual subscription of ss. We have card parties, concerts, indoor bowls or a social afternoon, and dancing every week. Up to 160 attend. I challenge any club or welfare council to better our arrangements under an economy budget. We get no assistance from the Kiwi lottery, the City Council the Rotary Club, or the Aged People’s Welfare Council. We paddle our own canoe on our subscription, occasional donations, and an annual fair. I thank the many business firms for their help in goods and articles for sale:—Yours, etc., FDWARD H. MOORE, President, Christchurch

Senior Citizens’ Association. June 28, 1964.

Sir, —“Shut Out” says the Senior Citizens’ Club is the one place of welcome to the aged in. Christchurch. Many senior citizens cannot go there, as they live in far older neglected areas. Why not another club in the eastern part of the* city, "get-at-able,”. from the surrounding vast suburbs rapidly decaying about it This area of Phillipstown and Linwood has been the victim of industrial expansion in a five-year “undisclosed plan.” How many persons have aged with their homes and faced their old age alone in the hope of better times ahead with progress? How many are on their own, dependent not on overfull hospitals but on courage to remain independent as long as able? Good neighbours formerly cared for each other ip emergencies. Many today rre unaware of any, or do not know the names of their next-door neighbours.—Yours, etc., TOWN PLANS. June 24, 1964.
