LONDON, June 28.
In enervating heat on the centre court, Spain’s Manuel Santana, the official third favourite for the Wimbledon title, lost in four sets to the unseeded Christian Kuhnke, of West Germany, here yesterday.
The tall, left-handed German swept to a 6-3, 7-5, 6-8, 6-4 victory to reach the quarterfinals of the men’s singles.
Santana showed no real lack of ability from the heel injury he suffered in a fall earlier in the tournament, but it may have affected him psychologically. Kuhnke seems to rise to the stimulus of the unique Wimbledon atmosphere. He is in the quarter-finals for the second year running. Kuhnke dominated play with his powerful service and long reach at the net and gave nothing away, making the little Spaniard work for his points. But his efforts tested his stamina to the full and at the end of the struggle, which lasted an hour and three-quarters, the German looked the more weary of the pair.
Kuhnke’s triumph followed the victory earlier in the day of his compatriot Wilhelm Bungert. The championships reached the half-way stage today with only four of the original eight seeded men surviving.
Also through to the quarterfinals yesterday were the fourth seed, Fafael Osuna, of Mexico, and the sixth seed, Fred Stolle, the Australian runner-up last year.
Their fourth-round men’s singles matches presented a sharp contrast of style. Osuna, with feline grace and speed, beat the 20-year-old Spanish international, Luis Arilla, by 6-4, 64, 10-12, 6-3, in a match full of artistry from both men, who kept the crowd on the oven-like centre court enthralled for an hour and 49 minutes,.
On the adjacent number one court lean, lanky Stolle, in 49 minutes of remorseless power tennis, crushed the 19-year-old Greek national champion. Nikki Kalogeropoulos, 6-2, 6-3, 6-0. Stolle, aged 26, qualifies for a quarter-final meeting on Monday with West Germany’s Wilhelm Bungert. Bungert, who is unseeded, in spite of his sparkling performance in reaching the semi-finals a year ago, beat Denmark’s Jorgen Ulrich 3-6, 6-2, 6-3, 6-0.
Osuna revelled in the heat. He is a man of champion-
ship stature. Already he is the United States title holder, and with his superb touch, lightning reflexes and speed, he appears to be a big threat to the power players. . Two of these, the favourites, Roy Emerson, Australia, and Chuck McKinley (U.S.A.) reached the last eight on Friday together with Abe Segal (South Africa) and Bob Hewitt (Australia). Women Qualify
In the fourth round of the women’s singles all seven surviving seeds qualified for the quarter-finals. The “odd girl out” Is the Argentine champion, Norma Bayion, who today beat Britain’s Deidre Catt, after having a pain-killing injection for an arm injury.
She next meets the favourite, Margaret Smith, of Australia, who beat Miss Baylon in the fourth round last year on her way to win the title.
The other quarter-final pairings will be: Billie Jean Moffit (U.S.A.) versus Mrs Ann Jones (Britain); Nancy Richey (U.S.A.) versus Lesley Turner (Australia); and Robyn Ebbern (Australia) versus Maria Bueno (Brazil).
