JOHANNESBURG, June 27. The proposed European tour by a mixed team of white and non-white athletes from South Africa has been cancelled. The athletes were to have competed at the British Amateur Athletics Association championships and other meetings in Europe. The South African Amateur Athletic : Union stated today: “In view of the International Olympic Committee’s decision it has decided to call off the proposed tour. The union wishes to make it clear that politics are being brought into sport and this is being countenanced by international bodies. “The recent occurrences at Wimbledon, as well as the decision of the 1.0 .C., make it quite clear that the issue does hot concern sport, but that enemies of the Republic wish to turn it to their advantage.” In Lausanne yesterday the 1.0. C. gave the South African Olympic Committee ’’one last chance” to renounce publicly racial discrimination in sport by August 16, or stay out of the Tokyo Games. In a letter to the South African committee the 1.0. C.
said the rescinding of the withdrawal of South Africa’s invitation could not be considered until its condition was met.
