Elkayel’s Stamina May Give Him Avondale Win

*■ “The • Presi” Special Service

AUCKLAND, June 26. Only the fittest and most thoroughly-seasoned middledistance runners need be considered for the £l5OO Rawson Memorial at Avondale tomorrow.

The 11-furlongs course is a hard test at the best of times. With the ground just about as bolding as it could be, the call on strength and stamina will be specially severe. Taking everything into account, the best chance seems to be Elkayel, which is the topweight with 9-1. It is in very wet going that Elkayel runs best, his form background is second to none and if his work at Te Rapa yesterday was an indication, he is thoroughly fit. Elkayel is a five-year-old gelding, by Fox Myth from Land Queen and one of three candidates for the big race from W. C. Winder’s stable at Te Rapa. The other two will be Straight Time and Jack James. As they race in different ownerships, none of the three will be bracketed on the totalisator.

Elkayel collected a run of minor placings during the spring. As soon as the ground softened. again in the late autumn he came to form again and from his last halfdozen starts he has secured two firsts, a second and two thirds. His victories were in the Hawke’s Bay Cup,, over'll furlongs, and in the Cornwall Handicap, 10 furlongs, on the first day of the Great Northern meeting. He was out of his distance last time, over a mile in the A.R.C. York Handicap, but finished a game third all the same. Elkayel has 101 b more than he won with in the Cornwall Handicap and lib more than he carried in the York Handicap. He is required to give 81b to Advocacy, the nexthighest weighted, and 161 b or more to such capable middledistance horses as Captain Lancaster (7-8), Straight Time (7-11), Blue Heather (7-13) and King’s Credit (7-10). Captain Lancaster has a last-start fourth to his credit, over 10 furlongs at Te Awamutu, and Straight Time and Blue Heather were both second when they last raced. Revello is the only candidate which had a win last time out but that was over hurdles in hack company. Elkayel is in a good looking book of rides held by G. F. Hughes. One of the others is Toureg, a popular fancy in the second leg of the T.A.B. double, the President’s Handicap. As well, Hughes will be on Earl Marshall (Winter Handicap), Mr Dickens (Kia Ora Handicap), Lucid (First Gratia Handicap) and Lou Fair (Second Gratia Handicap). The prospects of Earl Marshall and Mr Dickens look bright and Lucid might also be a chance. The race for the President’s Handicap, of £llOO, seven furlongs, seems likely to be between Toureg and Mali Peter Each is a fine mudlark right in form.

Toureg, a seven-year-old, has 9-0 and Mali Peter, a four-year-old, has 8-12. The best, chances otherwise are likely to be Firenze, Ashbourne Blue and Fair Bid. The ground has been well soaked by the rain of the last few days and further showers are expected. Selections. — 11.0 a.m. Windsor Hurdles: Tawhiti Kahl, .
