RACING Trentham Candidate May Win At Washdyke

Grand Monarch wiH have his final race "trial for next week’s Wellington Steeplechase in the Orbell Memorial Steeples at Washdyke today. It is hardly likely that his Trentham campaign will be continued unless the Royal Chief gelding manages to win today’s race or runs well for a minor placing.

Grand Monarch, a winner on the first day of the Dunedin winter meeting against hack ’chasers, and a minor place-getter in two later starts, has 10-7 in the Washdyke race and is on the minimum in the Wellington Steeples. He is owned and trained by Mr C. H. Wallis and will be ridden by J. D. Pankhurst, who has been out of action for some time because of an injury. The Gore-trained Tidal Rip and the South Canterbury jumper Napoleon Bonaparte seem likely to be Grand Monarch’s strongest rivals. In Form William David might win the other jumping race, the Elworthy Memorial Hurdles, if the track does not become heavy today. This Riccarton-owned and trained Reversal gelding has improved with each race lately, and should now run out a mile and three-quarters a little better than he did at Ashburton, where he was outstayed by Windsor Castle. Great Sensation, the record •take-earner for thorough-

breds in New Zealand, winner of three Wellington Cups and an accomplished performer at weight-for-age, will be an attraction when he parades for the Donald Grant Memorial, first leg of the double. Conditions of the race bring him into this field with 8.3, and the veteran Cassock gelding could hardly get a better chance to place his first win as an 11-year-old on'record. The track is unlikely to help the mudlarks, but Kumai has run some fine races on firm ground, and Mr T. K. S. Sidey*s grey may be the hardest for Great Sensation to beat Zinder seems certain of favouritism for the second leg, the Seaton Memorial, now Golden Blossom has dropped out of the field.
