Education Institute Ball

The North Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Education Institute held its annual ball at the Winter Garden last evening. Guests were welcomed by the branch president (Mr R. J. Harrison) and Mrs Harrison. More than 600 attended the ball.

Specially invited guests included: the Dominion president, Mr G. C. E. ChapmanCohen and his wife; the Dominion secretary, Mr G. R. Ashbridge, and his wife; the North Canterbury branch vice-presidents, Messrs K. J. E. McNaughton and C. F. Billcliff, and their wives; the North Canterbury secretary. Mr A. Dewar, Mr and Mrs G. Guy, Mr and Mrs W. J. Cartwright, Mr H. W. Findlay, Mr and Mrs W. P. Spencer, Mr and Mrs C. W. Memory, Mr and Mrs L. Cox. Autumn-toned chrysanthemums, berries, leaves, and greenery were arranged in formal design around the

alcoves and the lounge of the Winter Garden. Large posters illustrated the humorous side of the “In Service” training courses held in Christchurch during the year were hung above the ballroom floor.

Red-lighted candles, set in glittering white pine cones, and trails of ivy decorated the tables in the supper room. Members of the committee who organised the ball were: Mr C. L. Martin. Miss M. J. M. Robinson, Mrs E. J. Sylvester, Miss V. Allen, Messrs B. R. Hansen, R. L. Boocock, and W. A. Sparks. Mrs Harrison wore a gown designed with a slim-fitting

skirt of green Thai silk with a bodice of green lame featuring a high-front neckline cut to a deep square at the back.

Mrs W. P. Spencer, wife bf the secretary-manager of the Canterbury Education Board, chose a black gown embossed with sequins made with a heart-shaped neckline and a full- skirt

Mrs C. L. Martin, wife of the chairman of the ball committee, wore a gown of gold brocade embossed with a pink-petal design, the bodice was swathed into a cowl effect and the skirt was draped and caught to one side with a Dior rose.
