Transplant Of Kidneys
CN.Z-, Press Assn. —Copyright) CHICAGO, June 26.
A hospital has announced that a seven-year-old girl has received a transplant of kidneys from a newborn baby in the first apparently successful operation of its kind, the Associated Press reported. The healthy kidneys were removed from the one-hour-old baby almost immediately after its death from a congenital birth defect. The kidneys were removed with the parents’ consent.
The six-hour operation was performed last Friday at Passavant Memorial Hospital by a team of seven surgeons. It is thought to be the second time in medical history that an operation using an infant’s kidneys was tried. In the first, ’ performed in Los Angeles a year ago, .the patient died after a day. A spokesman for the hospital reported the girl in good condition yesterday but said it would be a year before it could be determined definitely whether she would survive.
