Seized Goods Auction “According To Plan”
(New Zealand Press Association)
HAMILTON, June 25. Te Aroha’s “rebel” fanners paid their rabbit rates today but still managed to score a victory in their current fight for “freedom and justice.” Hundreds of residents attended the auction of equipment seized from seven defaulting ratepayers—but the “rebels” dominated the proceedings. As a public auction, the proceedings were a farce. All of the seized pieces of equipment were knocked down to one bidder—the “Anti-Rabbit Board Syndicate”—at prices just sufficient to cover outstanding rates and the cost of the auction.-
A tractor was withdrawn from the sale. “We are very pleased with the result, and everything went exactly according to plan,” said the chairman of the Combined Ratepayers’ Association, Mr D. J. Burgess. .
