ON WAY TO BEATLES
Four Men In Smash
Four young men, travelling by car from Otematata to Christchurch last evening, were the first victims of Beatlemania in Christchurch.
They were headed for the Christchurch airport to see the Beatles arrive this morning. Their car hit the side of the Selwyn bridge and was wrecked. One of the young men declined to be admitted to hospital in Christchurch, although advised to by the casualty surgeon. He said he wanted to see the Beatles. Ordered to Leave Four teen-agers, two girls and two boys, arrived at the air terminal building about 11 p.m. expecting to be able to spend the night there. The Security police told them to leave and they went. Yesterday, all city policemen, including those with a day off, attended a final briefing session on arrangements for the Beatles’ visit. Police will be on duty outside the Clarendon Hotel all the time the Beatles are in Christchurch. The Christchurch Gas Company, with premises opposite the hotel, prepared plans for the boarding of the big, plate-glass showroom windows.
