MIXED CREWS
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) LONDON, June 26. Britain is to put forward a plan that would bring her Vbomber force and the new British tactical strike aircraft, the TSR2, under allied control in a nuclear force manned by crews of mixed nationalities, “The Times” reported today.
The plan is to be tabled in N.A.T.O. by the British Government in Paris early next month. The Ministry of Defence has completed detailed proposals based upon the concept first put forward by the Secretary of State for Defence (Mr Peter Thorneycroft) at the Ministerial meeting of the N.A.T.O. Council in Paris last December.
The detailed plan is now to be submitted to the N.A.T.O. working group set up to examine the establishment of a multi-lateral force—the American proposal for a fleet of missile-firing ships with mixed crews. Under the British plan, the multi-lateral concept would be applied to all nuclearweapon systems of suitable range and performance now in service or envisaged in existing plans.
