The placid surface of Irish politics has recently been disturbed by a breeze from an unexpected quarter, says the •'Financial Times” Dublin correspondent. The most conservative of :he three Irish political paries—the principal Opposition >arty. Fine Gael—has withut warning committed itself a a “shift to the Left” that lay well out-flank both the overnment party, Fianna ail. and the small opposition abour Party. Young Politician This move has been prepitated by a young Fine ael *front-bencher —38-year-d Declan Costello—son of e former Premier, John A. ostello, who was responsible r Ireland’s decision to beime a Republic outside the ommonwealth in 1949. Declan Costello entered the Sail 13 years ago, and has istinguished himself as a (regressive and radical poliical thinker, and one of the lost active “Europeans” mong Irish Parliamentarians.
