Cuckoos

Sir, —I was Interested to see the photo of the long-tailed cuckoo in Saturday’s issue. I understood that both the shining and long-tailed cuckoos left New Zealand in April to spend the winter in the Solomon Islands. Is it unusual to find this bird in New Zealand in June? Or do some birds stay behind?—Yours, etc., INTERESTED. June 22, 1964.

[Mr G. Guy, a member of the Christchurch branch of the New Zealand Ornithological Society, said he did not have the records of the longtailed cuckoos which remained in New Zealand, but it was not unusual for migratory birds to stay behind. A case in point was the godwit. About 300 spent the winter on the Sumner estuary. The cuckoo, which was born here, was probably a young bird.]
