ORCHESTRA TO HAVE MORE MEMBERS

(N«w Zealand Press Association)

WELLINGTON, June 25.

The disbanding of the N.Z.B.C. Concert Orchestra later this year and a substantial increase in the size of the Symphony Orchestra early next year were announced by the chairman of the New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation (Dr. F. J. Llewellyn) this morning. Tbe proposed new establishment would make the orchestra comparable in size with leading overseas orchestras, said Dr. Llewellyn. Members of the Concert Orchestra at the time of its disbandment would receive first consideration for places in the symphony orchestra. The Concert Orchestra was being disbanded because of problems associated with its maintenance. It had been established in 19«2 primarily to provide orchestral backing for the Opera Company and

the Ballet Trust, and this objective had been achieved to a considerable degree. “We have not lost sight of the needs of opera and ballet,” said Dr. Llewellyn, “and alternative proposals have been discussed with representatives of the organisations concerned. The corporation is prepared to give financial assistance to a scheme to provide orchestral support for them.”
