Ticket Mislaid

The ticket which won the first prize of £12,000 in the one hundred and fifty-eighth Golden Kiwi lottery drawn yesterday may have been burnt by an Outram farmer, Mr L. C. Mitchell. He said last night he had telephoned the other Mitchell families in the district and none of the members of the other families had taken tickets in the one hundred and fifty-eighth lottery. “I remember burning a lottery ticket about a fortnight ago.”—(PA.) Lanes Wanted “I think it is high time Memorial avenue was laned,” Mr A. I. R. Jamieson said at a meeting of the Automobile Association (Canterbury) council last evening. It was decided that Waimairi County Council should be approached.

100 Miles To Dentist

A 19-year-old girl, Helen Leov, of D’Urville Isand made a 100 mile trek to Nelson to visit the dentist recently. Miss Leov, whose home is on a 5000 acre sheep and cattle farm on the island, set out from home on horseback on a Wednesday afternoon for Port Hardy, about eight miles away, where she stayed until the next morning. She then travelled by boat and jeep to French Pass, by car to Rai Valley, and by bus to Nelson. Beatles Tickets The best sale of a ticket for the Beatles yesterday was made by a young man who claimed to have sold one seat for £9 and five others at only slightly lower prices. He had bought the maximum of eight tickets at the preferential booking price of £2 Ils each, and had sold all but the two he was keeping for himself. Yesterday afternoon he was bemoaning the fact that a subsequent offer had been made at £lO. Other tickets sold at lower figures. Two seats in the dress circle for the 6 p.m. show and three for the 8.30 p.m. show all sold at £5 each. Another Cold Day Drizzle and low temperatures brought wintery weather to the city for the third day in succession. Yesterday was a little warmer than previous days. A maximum of 48 degrees was recorded at 3 p.m. The morning was calm but a light easterly blew in the afternoon. The day began with fog and temperatures in the low forties. Haast Patrol An Automobile Association (Canterbury) patrol will be appointed in due course to live in the south WestlandHaast Pass road district and patrol the area, it was decided at a meeting of the A.A.C. council last evening. A recommendation to this effect was contained in a report from the roads, patrols and service committee.

Footpath Inquiry The cost of a footpath on the northern side of Cashmere road from Smart’s bridge to the Princess- Margaret Hospital is to be estimated by the Heathcote County Council. Influenza Christchurch schools have had their rolls reduced by influenza in the last fortnight. All State high schools have been hit badly, but private schools seem to have been relatively immune. Aranui High School had 150 pupils absent yesterday, and most others had upwards of 100 each in bed.
