University Recital

The Chamber Players of Wellington, a group from the New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation Symphony Orchestra, played Beethoven’s Septet in E flat major, Op. 20, in the University Hall on Thursday afternoon. It was a performance of few virtues, except for some pleasant sounds from the woodwind players at times. For the most part there was little in the way of balance, of interesting ensemble tones, of shapely phrasing, and musical inspiration in nuances. Only narrow limits in expression were used, and what there were sounded somewhat unconvincing. The performance lacked a planned shape, sense of climax, and vitality. This was below the standard expected, and attained at the university concerts this year.
