PROSECUTION OF HOUSEWIVES

AUCKLAND, June 19.
The Post Office did not like prosecuting housewives for not paying radio and television licences but it was left with no alternative, a Post Office radio engineer said today. Commenting on remarks yesterday by Mr H. Jenner Wily, S.M., who said he was “unhappy” at housewives being prosecuted—it should be the husband who was brought to court—the engineer said the Post Office was very reasonable when it demanded payment of licence fees. Prosecution did not follow until at least two months after the payment was due. During this time at least three notices were sent to the household asking for payment
