50 Million Sheep

WELLINGTON, June 18. The number of sheep in New Zealand passed the 50 million mark last year, according to the sheep returns at June 30, 1963, presented to Parliament today. An increase of 2.45 per cent fo ■ the year brought the total to 50,190.000: 23.178,000 in the South Island and 27,011,000 in the North Island. North Island flocks showed an increase of 1.88 per cent: South 3 13 per cent. Waimate county, with 1,079,000 sheep, showed one of the greatest increases—6.o7 per cent. But, most sheep—--2,162,000—are in the Ashburton county which increased 3.09 per cent. In Canterbury there were 8.588.000 sheep: in Westland, 168,000: Otago, 6,215,000: Marlborough, 1,284,000: Nel-
son, 599,000; and Southland, 6,322,000. There were 34,988,000 breeding ewes in New Zealand, an increase of 3.08 per cent. Canterbury had the greatest number of sheep and the most sheepowners, 7030.
